Steinaweg is a small village in Lower Austria, and this 60 Heller notgeld dates from the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria in the immediate postwar years — a period when hundreds of municipalities printed their own emergency currency simply to make change possible. The authority to do so was informal at best; local councils acted on necessity, not legislation.
Tomschik's involvement is worth noting. E. Tomschik produced designs for several Lower Austrian notgeld issues during this period, bringing a degree of graphic consistency to what was otherwise a chaotic municipal patchwork. The Jaksc/Pick reference JPR1023-60 places this among the documented series, though Steinaweg issues surface infrequently in trade.
