Schwaz, a small Tyrolean mining town that had been one of the wealthiest places in the Habsburg world during the sixteenth-century silver boom, issued this 60 Heller note as part of the broader Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921. The hyperinflationary pressure following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian crown system made small-denomination coinage effectively impossible to keep in circulation — hoarding and metal shortages forced thousands of local authorities to print their own emergency fractional currency.
Wagner of Innsbruck handled a substantial volume of Tyrolean municipal Notgeld during this period. The 60 Heller denomination is among the less common subdivisions in the Schwaz series.
