Krems an der Donau issued Notgeld across several denominations during the early 1920s, part of the broader Austrian municipal emergency money phenomenon driven by a chronic small-change shortage following World War I. The city's series was designed by Tomschik, whose name appears on a number of Lower Austrian Notgeld issues from this period — a regional illustrator working across multiple commissions simultaneously rather than a single dedicated house artist.
