Admont is best known for its Benedictine monastery and its baroque library — neither of which paid the baker. Austrian notgeld issued by municipal authorities in the early 1920s filled an acute small-change shortage caused by coin hoarding and postwar monetary instability. Marktgemeinde Admont printed locally rather than contracting a commercial printer, which accounts for the modest production quality typical of Styrian municipal issues from this period.
Three signatories were required: the mayor, his deputy, and the cashier — a formality that gave these essentially scrip-level tokens a veneer of civic authority.
