60 Heller

Hart is a small commune in Upper Austria, and this 60 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept through Austria between 1919 and 1921 — a practical response to the catastrophic coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy and the fragmentation of its currency system. Municipalities, down to the smallest villages, were authorized to issue their own emergency fractional notes when the new Austrian state could not supply enough small change.

The 60 Heller denomination is slightly unusual within local Notgeld series, which more commonly clustered around 10, 20, and 50 Heller values. Franz Erssl's signature as issuing authority places accountability at the commune level.
