The 60 Gulden denomination is an oddity in Dutch banking history — it exists because De Nederlandsche Bank issued notes in multiples of 60 to correspond with the old Amsterdam unit of account, a relic of the city's mercantile past that had already outlived its practical purpose by the time paper currency became routine. The design dates to 1914, but P#31 was printed on 30 April 1945 — the final day of Adolf Hitler's life, and with Allied forces already in the Netherlands. Notes printed that late in the occupation period were produced by the Dutch bank under extreme duress, with liberation imminent and the wartime economy in collapse.
Specimens printed in the last weeks of April 1945 rarely entered normal circulation.
