The 60 Grana denomination was revived under Ferdinando IV as part of a broader Neapolitan monetary reorganization in the 1790s, a period when the Kingdom of Naples was navigating impossible diplomatic pressures between revolutionary France and its Bourbon allies. Within two years of this issue's production, French forces under Championnet would take Naples, Ferdinando would flee to Palermo under British naval escort, and the short-lived Parthenopean Republic would briefly replace the monarchy entirely.
Coins struck across the 1796–1798 window show variation in die workmanship attributable to the Royal Mint's inconsistent labor conditions during the period.
