Francesco I became King of the Two Sicilies in 1825 following the death of his father Ferdinando I, who had spent much of his reign navigating Napoleonic occupation, forced abdication, and restoration under Austrian bayonets. The 60 Grana denomination occupied an awkward middle position in the Neapolitan monetary system — substantial enough for significant transactions but never as widely circulated as the smaller copper issues that dominated daily commerce in the mezzogiorno.
The .833 fineness was established by monetary reforms tied to post-Restoration stabilization efforts across the Italian peninsula, aligning Naples loosely with broader European silver standards of the period. Francesco's own reign lasted only until 1830.
