This piece was struck as part of a commemorative gold series issued under President François Duvalier, who used numismatic programs extensively to project international legitimacy and generate hard currency revenue during a period of severe economic isolation and suspended U.S. aid. Alexandre Pétion, the mixed-race republic's first president of the southern state and later the unified republic, lent ideological weight to the series — his 1816 grant of asylum and supplies to Simón Bolívar remains one of the more consequential acts of early Caribbean diplomacy.
