Nicaragua's Banco Central was established in 1960, replacing the earlier monetary functions of the Banco Nacional, which had operated under significant U.S. influence following the financial interventions of the early twentieth century. The 1960 founding marked the first time Nicaragua exercised fully independent control over its monetary policy and currency issuance.
