The 60 Baht denomination exists for one reason: the Thai belief that 60 years marks the completion of a full astrological cycle — five cycles of the twelve-year Chinese zodiac — making Bhumibol Adulyadej's 60th birthday in 1987 a cosmologically significant occasion, not merely a chronological one. The Bank of Thailand issued this as a commemorative rather than a circulating denomination, meaning most examples were sold directly to the public in presentation sleeves and never passed through commerce at all.
Square format notes are rare in any national issue. The 159 × 159 mm dimensions were a deliberate design choice to signal the note's commemorative status.
