The 60,000,000 lira face value reflects where Turkey stood by the late 1990s: chronic inflation had so thoroughly eroded the lira that a gold coin required eight digits to express its nominal worth. The country was averaging over 80% annual inflation through much of the decade, a sustained devaluation that would eventually force a currency redenomination in 2005, when six zeros were stripped from all values.
KM#1097.1 is one of several Darphane bullion issues from this period struck in 22-karat gold to a traditional Ottoman weight standard — the 15g format echoes older Turkish gold coinage conventions.
