Obverse description The royal arms of Portugal, comprising a shield charged with five escutcheons in cross formation each bearing five bezants, surrounded by a bordure of seven castles, displayed at center of the field. The escutcheon is surmounted by a royal crown of pronounced baroque character. Four cross-tipped fleurs-de-lis ornaments are symmetrically positioned in the quarters of the field flanking the shield. The circular legend, rendered in Latin, runs along the periphery between two beaded borders.
