Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal coat of arms, featuring the escutcheon of Portugal with the five quinas arranged in a cross pattern and the castles of the bordure, surmounted by a royal crown. The date 1717 appears divided on either side of the crowned shield. The circular legend reads IOANNES.V.D G PORT ET.ALG REX, identifying João V as King of Portugal and the Algarves. The coin shows a looped hole at the top, indicating it was mounted or worn as a pendant. The design is rendered in a bold, slightly crude style typical of early eighteenth-century Portuguese milled silver coinage.
