Obverse description Cast brass cash coin centred by a square perforation surrounded by a plain raised rim on both inner and outer borders. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in the traditional reading order — top, bottom, right, left — around the central hole, reading 嗣德通寶 (Tự Đức Thông Bảo). The characters occupy the four quadrants of the field in bold, slightly raised relief characteristic of Vietnamese cast coinage of the Tự Đức reign.
