| Obverse description | Equestrian portrait of Duke Frederick Ulrich of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel facing right, depicted in full armour with plumed helmet, mounted on a prancing horse with elaborately decorated saddle and caparison. The duke holds a baton or sword in his raised right hand, with a flowing mantle behind him. The horse's forehooves are raised in a levade posture above rocky ground with sparse vegetation. The entire composition is rendered in high relief in the Baroque manner characteristic of early seventeenth-century German die-cutting. The circular Latin legend reads FRIDERICUS ULRICUS DEI GRATIA DUX BRUNSVICENSIS ET LUNEBURGENSIS, separated from the central device by a beaded inner border. |
