Antonio Manoel de Vilhena served as Grand Master from 1722 to 1736, a period during which the Order's coinage achieved a consistency and quality rarely matched in its long minting history on Malta. The tari — derived from the Arabic "ṭarī," reflecting the island's medieval monetary inheritance — remained the backbone of Maltese circulation well into the eighteenth century. Vilhena himself funded the construction of the fortified town that still bears his name, Floriana's Vilhena Palace among other projects, suggesting a Grand Mastership more preoccupied with architecture than warfare.
The 6 tari denomination sits at half the 12-tari scudo, a subdivision the Order maintained with unusual discipline across successive Grand Masters.
