Obverse description Central field depicts a standing figure of Neptune or a provincial patron saint in full-length, facing forward, holding a trident or staff in the right hand, with the Zeeland provincial shield — bearing a rampant lion over waves — displayed at the lower left. The design is characteristically crude and irregular, consistent with hammered coinage of the late sixteenth century. The figure occupies a beaded or plain inner circle, with the Latin legend distributed around the periphery. The date or mint year appears in the field to the left of the figure. The overall style reflects the artisanal engraving conventions of the Middelburg Mint during the early Dutch Revolt period.
