Nijmegen held a peculiar position in the late seventeenth century: the city had hosted the 1678–1679 peace congress that ended the Franco-Dutch War, yet within years found itself under renewed French pressure as Louis XIV's expansionism continued. Local coinage of this period reflects the financial strain on Dutch municipalities forced to maintain their own civic minting operations while contributing to the broader war effort against France. The 6 Stuiver denomination sat in practical daily-use territory, too valuable to lose easily but circulated hard enough that survivors in decent condition are genuinely scarce.
