Obverse description Central field displays the quartered oval coat of arms of the Archbishopric of Cologne — incorporating the arms of Cologne, the Wittelsbach lozenges, and other territorial bearings — surmounted by an electoral bonnet with cross finial. The shield is set within an ornate oval cartouche. The surrounding circular legend reads MAX FRID·D·G·AR·EP & EL·COL·E & P·M·W & A·D, identifying Maximilian Frederick by the Grace of God Archbishop, Elector of Cologne, and Prince of Münster, Westphalia and Arnsberg, in Latin abbreviation. Mintmaster's initials E·G· appear at the base of the field.
