Utrecht struck this gold schellinck — popularly called the scheepjesschelling for the small ship on its reverse — primarily for export into the Dutch East India trade rather than domestic circulation. The VOC and its creditors moved enormous quantities of Dutch provincial gold coinage eastward throughout the eighteenth century, and Utrecht's output fed directly into that demand. The long date range reflects continuous restriking from largely unchanged dies, a common Dutch provincial practice that makes precise date attribution within the series difficult.
Delmonte's classification separates the gold issues carefully from the silver scheepjesschelling coinage, with G#987 covering the .917 fine strikes specifically.
