| Obverse description | Crowned bust of James VI facing right, wearing armour and a ruff collar, depicted in a bold, somewhat schematic hammered style typical of early 17th-century Scottish coinage. The Roman numeral VI appears prominently in the left field, denoting the denomination. A beaded inner border frames the effigy, with the peripheral legend running clockwise around the coin within an outer beaded border. The flan is irregular in shape, as is characteristic of hand-struck hammered coinage of the period. |
