The 3rd Coinage of Charles I in Scotland was issued during one of the most politically combustible periods in British history — the years immediately preceding the Bishops' Wars, when Charles's attempt to impose Anglican liturgy on Presbyterian Scotland had already triggered the National Covenant of 1638. Edinburgh Mint production during 1639–1641 was conducted against a backdrop of open military mobilization, and the Scottish privy council's control over coinage policy was increasingly strained by the King's absentee governance from London.
Spink 5570 is among the scarcer denominations of this issue. The 6-shilling Scots was worth only sixpence sterling — a reminder of how far the Scottish pound had depreciated against English currency by this date.
