Jamaica lacked a dedicated coinage for most of the colonial period, relying instead on countermarked Spanish colonial silver to fill the gap. This piece — a Spanish colonial eight reales, almost certainly struck at Mexico City — was officially countermarked by Jamaican authorities to fix its value in local currency and authorize its use on the island. The 1758 date reflects the reign of Ferdinand VI of Spain, whose name appears in the original legend despite Britain and Spain being intermittent rivals throughout this period.
