Catalonia's 1836 copper issues were produced under extraordinary pressure — the First Carlist War had fractured the Spanish monetary system, and the Principality was operating with considerable administrative autonomy as Isabelline forces struggled to hold territory. Provincial mints stepped in to fill gaps left by a Madrid government too preoccupied with civil war to maintain reliable coinage supply. The Carlist threat was particularly acute in Catalonia, where irregular forces controlled substantial rural areas throughout the late 1830s.
Cal#681 specimens frequently show uneven planchet preparation, a known characteristic of this issue rather than a strike anomaly.
