August William ruled Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel from 1714 until his death in 1731, a period when the fractional silver coinage of the Lower Saxon duchies was under persistent pressure from debased imitations circulating out of smaller neighboring mints. The 6 Pfennig denomination occupied an awkward middle ground in everyday exchange — too small for significant transactions, too valuable to ignore in wage payments to tradespeople and laborers.
Welter 2412 encompasses the full span of this type across fifteen years of production, meaning die marriages and minor legend variations almost certainly exist within the series and remain incompletely catalogued.
