Aanvullende informatie

Christoph Bernhard von Galen, who took control of Münster's bishopric in 1650, spent much of his early reign rebuilding both the city's fortifications and its monetary system after the devastation of the Thirty Years' War. The small silver issues of this period reflect that reconstruction effort — the Westphalian settlement of 1648 had left the region's coinage fragmented and debased, and restoring credible small denomination currency was as much a political act as a fiscal one.

Von Galen would later become notorious as "Bombenbernd" for his siege warfare tactics, including his prolonged assault on the city of Münster itself during the Anabaptist crisis suppression campaigns of the 1650s and 1660s.
