Erik of Pomerania inherited the Swedish crown through his great-aunt Margaret I of Denmark, who engineered the Kalmar Union in 1397 to bind Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under a single monarch. His reign over Sweden was contested almost from the start — Swedish nobles resented the union's centralizing tendencies and his appointment of Danish and German bailiffs to administer Swedish castles. The Åbo mint, operating in what is now Turku, Finland, served the eastern reaches of the Swedish realm during his turbulent tenure.
Erik was deposed by the Swedish council in 1439, the same year this type's production ceased.
