The Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek's coinage program was itself a political act — Paul Kruger's government established the Pretoria Mint in 1892 specifically to assert Transvaal's independence from British financial systems, using gold reef revenues to back a sovereign currency. The sixpence was struck across only six years before the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War effectively ended the Republic's monetary autonomy.
The 1892 issues are notably scarcer than later dates, reflecting the mint's early production limitations in its first operational year. By 1897, with war clouds gathering, mintages climbed sharply.
