The New Zealand Commercial Exchange Co. Limited occupied a peculiar niche in late colonial finance — not a trading bank, not a government body, but a private exchange and investment firm that briefly issued its own low-denomination scrip during the 1890s financial squeeze. The 6 Pence denomination suggests these were intended for petty commercial transactions, filling a gap left by the chronic shortage of small coin that plagued New Zealand's provincial commercial centres well into the Federation period.
Local printing in Wellington rather than commissioning a British security printer kept costs down, though it also meant the note lacked the anti-forgery sophistication of contemporary Trading Bank issues. The company did not survive long into the new century.
