Australian military messes occasionally issued their own scrip when official small change was scarce in camp — a practical workaround with no formal authorization from the Commonwealth Bank or the military hierarchy. The 40th Infantry Battalion was an AIF unit raised in 1940, and mess scrip of this type circulated only within the confines of the officers' mess itself, redeemable for food, drink, or canteen goods.
These notes were never intended to survive. Most were redeemed and destroyed as a matter of course, which makes any extant example genuinely uncommon. Printing was almost certainly done locally, on whatever materials were available at the time of raising.
