Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel operated under dual rule from 1685, when Anthony Ulrich joined his elder brother Rudolph August as co-regent — an arrangement that produced a notably fractious partnership. Rudolph August preferred withdrawal from public life while Anthony Ulrich pursued an ambitious cultural and diplomatic program, eventually converting to Catholicism in 1710 to advance dynastic interests. Coins struck under their joint authority span a fifteen-year window that closes with Rudolph August's death in 1704, after which Anthony Ulrich ruled alone.
The Mariengroschen denomination was the workhorse of Lower Saxon small commerce throughout this period, with Brunswick mints producing it continuously across multiple reigns.
