Maximilian I established the Hall mint in Tyrol as the financial engine behind his imperial ambitions, and the Sechser was a direct product of the monetary reforms he pushed through in the 1490s — reforms aimed at rationalizing the chaotic patchwork of denominations circulating across Habsburg territories. Hall's access to rich Tyrolean silver mines made it the logical production center, and the mint operated with unusual consistency throughout his reign.
The .937 fineness was deliberately set above many contemporary German silver issues, a calculated move to win commercial trust in trade routes crossing the Alpine passes.
