Hessen-Homburg was one of the smallest sovereign states in the German Confederation, with a population that never exceeded roughly 25,000. Philip August Frederick, who acceded in 1839, ruled this pocket-sized landgraviate for barely three years before his death in 1846. The coinage output under his name is correspondingly thin, making any surviving piece a narrow documentary window into one of the Confederation's most minor minting authorities.
KM#15 was struck in billon at a silver content too low to carry meaningful intrinsic value — functional small change for a state too modest to sustain a proper silver coinage.
