Hesse-Darmstadt issued this small billon piece during the years immediately preceding the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, which proved catastrophic for the grand duchy. Louis III backed Austria, and after Prussia's victory at Königgrätz, Hesse-Darmstadt was forced to cede its northern territories and pay a war indemnity — effectively ending meaningful independent monetary policy within a few years. The North German Confederation's currency reforms soon made fractional issues like this obsolete.
Production ceased by 1867, just three years into the run.
