Leopold I's six kreuzer pieces from the Prague mint fall within the long stretch of his reign defined by near-constant military expenditure — the Ottoman siege of Vienna came in 1683, the year immediately before this issue begins, and the subsequent campaigns of the Holy League kept imperial finances under sustained pressure throughout the 1680s. Small silver was struck in quantity to meet troop pay and provincial circulation demands, and Prague was one of several Bohemian mints pushed hard during this period.
The Diet references covering two separate entries and the divergent Herinek numbers suggest at least two distinct die varieties exist within this date range.
