Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld in 1805 was a duchy of negligible economic weight, and the decision to strike a gold pattern of a 6 Kreuzer — a denomination that circulated almost exclusively in silver — points to a presentation or approval piece rather than any serious minting intent. Francis Frederick Anthony, who had ruled since 1800, died in December 1806, just over a year after this piece was struck. No regular gold issue followed.
