Obverse description Central field features the large cursive royal cypher 'E' of Duke Ernst I, surmounted by a ducal crown. The monogram is flanked by crossed branches composed of an olive sprig to the right and a palm frond to the left, their stems crossing at the base of the field. A mintmaster's initial appears below the crossed branches at the bottom of the field. No peripheral legend is present; the design is confined entirely to the central motif.
