1622 places this coin squarely in the opening years of the Thirty Years' War, when Augsburg — still functioning as an independent imperial city — faced severe monetary pressure from the broader Kipper und Wipperzeit crisis, a continent-wide debasement spiral in which mints across the German states raced to produce underweight, debased small silver to exploit exchange rate differentials.
