Bremen resisted adopting the Prussian-led Vereinsthaler system longer than most northern German states, continuing to strike in its traditional Grote-based reckoning well into the 1850s. This 1857 issue came just three years before Bremen's monetary system was formally absorbed into the broader German framework under the 1860 coinage treaty. The billon composition — nearly half silver — reflects a conscious effort to maintain the coin's perceived value against a tide of token-weight issues flooding neighboring states.
