Ragusa maintained nominal independence through the Napoleonic upheaval largely by playing neutral powers against each other, but 1801 proved one of its final years of functioning monetary autonomy. Napoleon dissolved the Republic outright in 1806, making this late issue part of a compressed final chapter of Ragusan coinage. The city-state's mint had operated continuously since the medieval period — a remarkable run ended not by financial failure but by French occupation.
