Adolphus XIII ruled Holstein-Schaumburg-Pinneberg through a period of fragmented north German territorial politics, and his coinage reflects the proliferation of small-denomination silver issues that characterized the late sixteenth-century Kreisgroschen system. The County of Pinneberg, absorbed into Danish Holstein by 1640, left an extremely compressed numismatic record — issues from this specific comital line are seldom encountered, and the 1589 date falls near the productive middle of Adolphus's reign before succession disputes complicated the county's administration.
