Obverse description The central field bears the elaborate civic arms of Hamburg: a large quartered shield displaying three turreted castle towers above a portcullis gate, with a heraldic rose on an escutcheon at the base, all rendered in bold relief characteristic of late Gothic hammered coinage. The shield is flanked on either side by a long cross extending to the inner border. A continuous beaded inner border frames the design, with the circular Latin legend beginning at the top of the coin.
