The Miskolc Orthodox Jewish Community issued these small-denomination fillér notes as internal congregation scrip during 1938–39, a period when Hungarian Jews were being systematically stripped of economic participation under the First and Second Jewish Laws. With access to mainstream commerce increasingly restricted, Jewish communal organizations turned to internal exchange instruments to keep local trade functioning within the community. Schwarcz Soma was a local Miskolc printer — almost certainly Jewish himself — which makes the production chain entirely self-contained.
Miskolc had one of Hungary's larger provincial Jewish populations; the community was largely destroyed in May–June 1944.
