| Additional information |
Susak is a geological oddity — a small Adriatic island built almost entirely on a thick layer of sand deposited over a limestone base, making it unlike virtually any other island in the Croatian archipelago. Its isolation produced a distinct dialect, dress, and culture that drew serious ethnographic attention throughout the 20th century. The community's most dramatic chapter came after World War II, when much of the population emigrated en masse to New York and New Jersey, leaving the island largely depopulated within a generation.
The six-euro denomination is specific to Croatia's "Island" collector series, introduced after EU accession in 2023.
