Johann Christian and Georg Rudolf were the two surviving sons of Joachim Friedrich of Liegnitz-Brieg, who died in 1602 leaving the duchy under their joint rule — an arrangement that produced a brief but prolific series of high-denomination gold multiples struck as gifts and diplomatic currency rather than circulating money. The 1605 date places this piece among the earliest issues of their co-reign, before Georg Rudolf's eventual separation to govern Wohlau independently.
Six-ducat pieces from this issuer are vanishingly rare survivors. Struck for presentation rather than commerce, most entered noble treasuries and never returned to the market.
