This piece commemorates the failed Swedish siege of Copenhagen in 1658–59, when Frederik III personally rallied the city's defense after Charles X Gustav's army crossed the frozen straits of the Little Belt and Great Belt — a winter march that stunned Europe and briefly appeared to spell the end of the Danish kingdom. The Swedes never took the city. The siege collapsed, and Frederik emerged with his monarchy not only intact but politically transformed.
The victory was decisive in accelerating Frederik's abolition of the elective monarchy in 1660, consolidating hereditary absolute rule. This multiple ducat issue was almost certainly struck as a presentation or gift piece rather than for circulation — at over 20 grams of gold, it functioned as a dynastic statement.
