Obverse description Central device features the crowned arms of Bern — a shield bearing a diagonal stripe with a walking bear — set within an elaborate baroque cartouche with foliate and acanthus scrollwork. An olive branch flanks the left side of the shield, while decorative foliage adorns the right. A royal crown surmounts the shield. The circular legend MONETA AUREA REIPUB · BERNENS · runs around the periphery in Latin, reading from the lower left. The coin field is smooth and polished, with a finely milled border encircling the entire design.
