The Republican arms of Geneva — a half eagle combined with the key of Saint Peter — are depicted centrally in a heraldic shield. A radiant sun appears above the shield. The peripheral legend RESPUBLIC GENEVEN runs around the coin in Latin script.

Reverse description A double cross pattée with eight radiating arms fills the field within a beaded inner circle. At the center of the cross appears the Christogram IHS within a small sunburst medallion. The date and the motto POST TENEBRAS LUX — 'After Darkness, Light,' the celebrated device of the Genevan Reformation — are inscribed in the peripheral legend around the design.
