| Beschrijving voorzijde | The complete coat of arms of Barbados occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield supported by a dolphin (fish) to the left and a pelican to the right, surmounted by a fist grasping two crossed sugarcane stalks. The denomination of 55 dollars was chosen to mark Barbados's 55th anniversary of independence from Britain in 1966, the same year the island simultaneously shed its status as a Commonwealth realm and became a republic — an event that generated considerable international attention and a wave of commemorative issues from the Central Bank.
